Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Lux & Borough Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- What types of custom furniture do you offer? We specialize in bespoke, heirloom-quality upholstered furniture, including custom sofas, sectionals, modular configurations, loveseats, accent chairs, ottomans, and custom sleep sleepers.
- How does the custom design process work? You begin by selecting a foundational frame profile (such as our Antoinette, Grantham, or Kensington styles) and category type. From there, you can customize the dimensions, upholstery (fabrics, velvets, or leathers), frame finishes, and tailored details like tufting, skirts, or nailhead trim accents.
- Can I customize furniture dimensions for unique architectural spaces? Yes. We frequently build custom furniture tailored to non-traditional layouts, tight corners, or historical homes with narrow doorways and halls. We can alter depths and lengths to perfectly fit your spatial footprint.
- What is your current production lead time? Because every piece is handcrafted from the frame up by master artisans, our standard production timeline typically ranges from 8 to 12 weeks from the date your configuration and upholstery selection are finalized.
- Can I change or cancel my order after it has been placed? Modifications or cancellations can only be made within 48 hours of order placement. After this grace period, your custom piece moves directly into frame production and material cutting, making further alterations impossible.
Upholstery & Materials
- Why should I order physical fabric swatches before completing my order? Digital displays alter colors through varied monitor brightness, true-tone filters, and ambient illumination. Physical swatches allow you to verify true colors, assess texture weight, and evaluate how the textile interacts with your home’s unique lighting conditions.
- How many free swatches can I order? We provide your first 5 fabric or leather swatches completely free of charge, shipped directly to your door to ensure absolute design confidence.
- Do you offer kid- and pet-friendly upholstery options? Yes. We offer an extensive collection of premium Performance Fabrics specifically engineered to resist stains, moisture, and heavy structural wear, all while maintaining an incredibly soft and luxurious hand feel.
- What kinds of leather do you use? We use exclusively top-tier, genuine natural leathers. These high-grade hides showcase organic textures and develop a rich, stunning patina over time, bringing structural prestige to both contemporary and traditional spaces.
- What is the difference between your plush velvets and standard fabrics? Our plush velvets offer a deep, dramatic sheen and intense tactile softness that reacts beautifully to light, whereas our high-end woven linens and menswear-inspired textiles provide crisp, structured tailoring and multi-dimensional geometric weaves.
Construction & Craftsmanship
- What is an "8-way hand-tied" spring suspension, and why does it matter? Considered the absolute gold standard of furniture engineering, it features heavy-gauge carbon steel coil springs set by hand. Master craftsmen tie knots in eight distinct directions, completely distributing weight loads to prevent sagging, tilting, or center shifting over decades of use.
- How do your sectionals differ from mass-produced retail alternatives? Mass-market sectionals use cheap drop-in coils, sinuous wire staples, and rigid configurations. Lux & Borough custom modular sectionals are built out of fully finished, independent components (corner units, standalone chaises, armless loveseats) allowing total control over layout configurations.
- What is authentic hand button tufting? Instead of simulating tufting with shallow machine stitches and glued buttons, our artisans map out a precise diamond grid pattern onto thick premium foam, meticulously folding, pleating, and anchoring the upholstery fabric deep within the solid wood frame using high-tension anchors.
- What materials are used to construct your furniture frames? All Lux & Borough profiles feature heavy-duty, kiln-dried hardwood frames. Kiln-drying removes moisture to eliminate warping, cracking, or bowing, ensuring an estate-quality structural foundation that lasts a lifetime.
- Are accent configurations customizable, like exposed wood or nailhead trims? Absolutely. You can fine-tune premium details including elegant dressmaker skirts, polished metal nailhead trims, contemporary recessed block feet, or hand-carved exposed natural wood frames.
